Difference between LCD and CRT monitor

LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) have rapidly been replacing CRT monitors around the world. With manufacturers enhancing LCD panel sizes to larger while their prices keep dropping. Retailers and manufacturers to compete in this tough market, throw around lot of terms and jargons to describe their products. For those who are interested to know the difference for better purchasing, this article could be more useful. It looks to cover the basic difference so that one can make an informed decision before buying one.

LCD

The prominent advantage of LCD monitors is its size and weight. They are 80% lighter than an equivalent CRT monitor. LCD screens incline to make a very little tiredness to the eyes. On the other hand, the constant and light barrage with scan lines of CRT tube causes excess strain within few minutes from watching the display. The reduced intensity of the LCD screens together with their on and off pixels creates less fatique.

The most noteworthy disfavor of LCD screens is their fixed resolution, which means it can display only the pixels in its matrix and not more than that. It can some time lower the pixel through Extrapolation, a method in which smaller pixel is generated blending multiple pixels and may some time lead to fuzzy or blur image.

Playing videos are quiet problematic with LCD monitors. Though been rectified in the present models, reports say the problem still persists.

Pros

  • Energy Efficient
  • Less eye fatigue
  • Small and light

Cons

  • Image blur
  • Motion blur
  • Reduced color clarity

CRTs

The basic advantage of CRT monitor over LCD is their color. The depth of their colors and the contrast ratios are much greater on CRT monitors. Which means you experience means more vivid and lively pictures. Many graphical designers until now use expensive CRT models in their work because of the color advantage.the drawback is that the color descends when the phosphorus in the tube crack-up.

The CRT Monitor has an ability to scale easily to various resolutions, known popularly as Multisync. The electron beam when adjusted, automatically aligns the screen to lower resolution and maintains the clarity of the picture.

The size and weight of the CRT tubes make it most un-preferable. The electron beam generates lot of heat, igniting the monitor very soon and of course consumes more power than that if LCD monitors.

Pros

  • Color clarity and depth
  • Increased refresh rates
  • Multisync capability

Cons

  • Heavy and large
  • Consumes large amount of energy
  • Generate excess heat
